Medicine of course is the critical tool - but the main reason these people died was a cruel and hateful US administration that wanted them dead, and didn’t wish to take any action, even to the point of abandoning personal friends. They didn’t acknowledge the disease even existed for 4 years after doctors had identified it in New York and LA (imagine an administration pretending Covid didn’t exist from 2019 until 2023), and a mostly-ambivalent or ignorant populace worldwide.
I remember it was not uncommon to hear people saying the ‘gay disease’ will ‘solve the gay problem’ even into the 90s due their conservative bigotry.
Business as usual for the evil American government.
I hate how basic things we all deserve are described as “privilege” or “luxury”, like, dying before you’re 40, or not having basic housing and amenities, or healthcare or whatever, or not being discriminated against in daily life, these ate not privileges, these are things we should all have. We just don’t because some people are marginalised because the world is awful, not because some rich white cis straight neurotypical able bodied men living in a first world country are “privileged” by getting a decent life
This makes me think of Elysium by Neil Blomkamp.

Modern medicine is truly incredible. To be honest, I often feel like most technology is either a wash or even net harmful to humanity and I fantasize about living in ancient times before everything went to shit.
But hot damn I do not want to go without our medical system, despite all its warts.
I guess we’ll just need to very carefully destroy all technology unrelated to medicine so we can create my an-prim but with universal healthcare utopia.
