Short answer: I don’t know. But before stuff becomes classic it starts off being old, and traditionally you market new stuff to a younger generation by differentiating it from old stuff. Another layer might be how Bauhaus’s tasteful minimalism is pretty much the opposite style to the shoes. Whether old architecture styles were widely known at the time, or it was just the writer’s whim, is another “honestly, who knows?”
