My theory is the authentication server is down or isn’t responding fast enough, and if there is no answer from the server then the login code just says the password is wrong.
i distinctly remember ea constantly doing this with origin accounts. Deepshits forced users to rotate passwords, but didn’t ever feel like notifying the user itself.

It’s a good theory, but we’ll have to check the comic’s source code to be sure.
