There’s a foot/bike path out in the fields here, and man, people go completely stupid unleashing their dogs. Was walking there for an hour yesterday, saw like 8 dogs and none of them had a leash.
3 of them came running towards me, at a distance where their owners could not have intervened anymore.
The owners of 2 of them then also really struggled to keep them off the path as a bike came downhill.
And man, I really had to stop myself from kicking one of the dogs, because it ran right up to my feet.I’m with you. Dogs should not be off leash if it’s against the law or ordinance, and they should not be off leash if they cannot be controlled by voice.
We used to have a dog who was aggressive towards other dogs. We took great care to try and socialize him gently and train him and keep everyone safe (including walking him late at night, and always on a secure leash and harness).
One time he attacked an off-leash dog who came by to sniff and was clearly not listening when her owner called her. It was very traumatic for everyone involved, the other dog almost died, and I still have the scar on my leg.
The fact that people think “tee hee hurr durr my dog is so nice” is ridiculous and not a good enough reason to cause havoc. Sure, your dog might be nice but that doesn’t change that fact that other dogs might be aggressive, and that people (especially children) who are scared of dogs should be allowed to walk the streets without being in terror.
I had someone tell me, “Don’t worry, my dog is nice!”
And I replied while trying to prevent my dog from attacking the one who ran up to her, “Mine isn’t.”
Off leash dogs in fields? The horror! They should only play with their dogs in the shit hole suburban streets where cars will kill humans and dogs alike!
And man, I really had to stop myself from kicking one of the dogs, because it ran right up to my feet.
I know what you mean. When I hear dog haters threaten violence against dogs I have a really hard time not beating them about the head and shoulders with a stout stick.
I am not downvoting you, but I think you’re not taking seriously the responsibility a dog-owner has to other people, and how deluded some dog owners are.
I have had some serious close calls (like, instinctively pulling my hand away from a dog that went from no signs of aggression to full on hard snapping at me, where I could feel the slick teeth on inside of my palm as I pulled it away) from dogs that were not on leashes and the owners were not even phased. In those situations I absolutely have to go through what I’m willing to do and yes, I’m willing to fight that dog because it clearly is ready to injure me.
Some dogs are sweethearts but some dogs need to be on leashes and probably also need (humane) muzzles in public, and likewise some people think they are responsible when they are not.
To add to this, for those dogs that are behaved, I don’t know that. I have never met your dog before and assume all dogs are hostile until they prove otherwise. Just because you think your dog is okay with strangers, what happens if I happen to have my own dog on a leash who is not okay with strangers dogs approaching them.
Your choice to keep a pet should not be the burden of others to determine the safety of.
