I’m reminded of the guy who supports paint.net pretty much single-handed announcing that he updated the suite to Linux in short order thanks to help from an AI toolset.

People were really fucking hostile to him for no compelling reason. This was an obnoxious and finnicky job that nobody else seemed keen on contributing to. It was a one-man project that I’ll personally say has been my go-to for image editing for… at least a decade. And it was incredibly high demand. Arguably the number one request for future releases delivered at long last.

At some point, folks are going to have to square the circle between “I want access to a large and useful suite of free-at-use software that I can download as needed without juggling licenses” and “I don’t want any of the indie developers I’m relying on to develop using tools I’m ethically opposed to”.

You dig into to a nice big juicy steak on the house, then get all upset because it’s not free-range? Fuck off with that.

This, and people promoting it so much. I feel like my projects will lose value because anyone can just put projects in GitHub and people aren’t going to check everything to make sure you’re good.

Job market is already so noisy, it’s super hard for anyone to even look at your CV unless you have connections. And the projects I’ve put years of effort are becoming less and less relevant.

And what even is the point of making my tool open source and putting years of effort into it when someone can just feed it to their AI, generate something that’s similar but with fancy website and promoting it using their platform

Currently doing a minor contribution to a Matrix SMS bridge, and this was the biggest concern from the author about PRs.

It’s unfortunate because it does make people very mad about when it’s used even legitimately. I am not a programmer, I am a system administrator, and I run a local model. And don’t worry, I have full off-grid solar too, so I’m not increasing energy demand. That aside, it is incredibly useful for helping me save time and brain space on documentation.

especially these days where documentation is scattered, fragmented, might not even be available other than on like Discord or something stupid, being able to have my local model, which has the ability to search the web, be able to just pull up documentation where I already pretty much know the process at a high view just need the finer details brought to the front of my brain. so I will know if it’s making shit up or bullshitting me easily, this is incredibly useful and saves so much time.

especially when you’re dealing with like setting up a bunch of different security through things like apparmor, namespaces, LXC, seccomp etc. It’s just so much to keeping your brain at once. Its easy to have enough in there to know whether the answer it’s giving you is correct or wrong and its great at then taking your step-by-step process and formatting it nicely for something like a wiki.js instance which makes documentation take no time at all so I actually do it so that in the future when I need this again I can just go to my documentation that is now actually completed.

But people using it for code generation or art generation have made the whole thing so controversial that it’s difficult to use it for its actual best case, which is basically just a really good documentation search engine.

To be honest I’ve had a good amount of tools vibe-coded that have been extremely useful for me that I would never have the time to do myself.

I do get why a lot of people don’t like it though.

I am currently vibe coding a project for tracking my money a bit (as a young person with not a lot of money). It’s going great and I’m kinda learning a few things here and there but I honestly still don’t understand the syntax of dart/flutter thousands of lines later.

I would never put this on my CV. I would never sell this app, would barely give it to friends since there’s a chance everything blows up and I’d have 0 clue how to fix it. This is a shitty tool that even with my limited understanding of app development is clearly held together by hopes, dreams, and a 20 dollar AI subscription.
