Aight though, they got a point.

See, way back as a kid, I had a decent nose. Nothing crazy, but good enough to pick up fairly faint stuff.

As young adult, I started smoking tobacco. My sense of smell reduced. Which, considering my job cleaning up humans and all the smells that go with that job, I ain’t complaining.

But then I quit smoking for a while, and in about six months, I started noticing that the scents were stronger. Ended up smoking again, and it died back. Smoked for the next decade after that, past disability and into my new life.

And then I had enough of tobacco. I hated it and was done. Quit again via chantix and haven’t gone back.

But, my grandmother was a nose. As in she could smell the faintest traces of things, and unfortunately that went with a sensitivity to smells and irritants.

Well, guess who inherited the sensitivity in his middle years lol. But! With that came some extra range as well. Not as good as my grandmother, who could have been a professional nose as best as I can tell. But sharper than it used to be before I smoked.

And I’ll tell you, stepping outside on a nice day? I gotta stop a bit sometimes because all those smells rush in. Petrichor after rains, flowers in bloom, traces of smoke from cookouts and backyard fires, it’s almost overwhelming. Just the smell of green on a spring day is intoxicating if I’m not in such a hurry that my brain is filtering hard.

So I get it my canine homies, I get it. You take your time and soak those smells in

Our equivalent is staring at the landscape.

We see best with our eyes, they “see” best with their nose.

A dog’s sense of smell is at least 10,000 times that of a human. Imagine how good food smells when someone is cooking a nice meal and multiply that times 10,000. When you step outside, see how many smells you can identify, now multiply that times 10,000. It’s a surge of information about everything with an odor within a very large radius.
