You gave a stranger with no soul the keys to everything you own.

They gave a stranger with no soul that is owned by another company the keys. It’s like they have no idea what corporate espionage is.

Enterprises also become dependent on future cartel pricing. If AI is running their company/tech stack, then 10x or 100x pricing increases in AI gives them little time to shift away with few people who understand the company/'s tech stack/purpose.

Not really no. While it’s a fun story, there are open source models that are about 6 months behind the frontier models. OTOH, if they pass the legislation to “prevent dangerous models in the wild” I’m sure those models will be shutdown, at which point they can start charging cartel prices. Assuming the AI companies don’t become like the airlines: a cut throat business with almost zero margin, where all the value is taken by the consumers.

Once upon a time, there was this magical thing called “the cloud.” The cloud was a place where data centers were a thing of the past, all the system and network admins were unemployed, and you could just deploy anything, with the click of a single button.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago.

We’re in a meeting when one of the mid-level execs makes a comment about doing a project a certain way “in case we want to move off Azure.” He was serious too.

I nearly snorted my coffee out my nose because we are never going to move off Azure. They have us by the balls but it would cost more, millions more, to migrate to a different cloud provider.

But then from a cloud (and “AI”) providers perspective, thats the goal. They want you dependent on them to the point where you literally can’t afford to leave.

Stuff like this is what made me understand that the MBA class is full of incompetent people who focus too much on networking and too little on learning how things work.

I had to take a “business class” as a requirement for a programming degree. The final project was to present a business plan. It was a group project and one group had a member who could not read their part of the presentation. That is to say they were illiterate, not that they were experiencing stage fright. I presume they got a passing grade, too, since the instructor offered no criticism.

MBA’s will chase the lowest cost option regardless of how terrible it is. Like replacing skilled IT with people who will “work for $2 a day!!!” I lost my job hears ago to that pitch and I’ve talked to others who heard the identical claim “$2 a day I have to hire them.” Then it turned out most of these experts were totally unqualified to do the job. Wonder why 70% of websites are glitchy as fuck these days?

And the saracha company famously fucked themselves when the owner brought in a one of their relatives who was a newly minted MBA. These business genius fucked over the farmer the company has worked with since it was founded and ended up not being able to source the peppers they needed to produce their sauce. Remember the shortage a few years ago? Yeah that was cause the MBA dumbfuck burned the supplier that had helped them become a household name all in the sake of slightly more $$$

Also, someone has to run the AI and know how to fact check the output and know what prompts to input. And also be able to talk to customers and those people generally want to talk to a human who actually can understand them. Also, no in office workers means a real estate collapse. Everyone had to go back to the office urgently for the economy and for the real estate but also get fired cause of AI. The logic did a little hop/skip there.

It is essentially the platonic perfect form of enshittification, just aimed at business customers, instead of consumers.

The ultimate form of capital canibalizing itself, and everything else.

Any CEO that couldn’t rub two neurons together and like, immediately realize that this is what would happen, that this is the business model, is definitionally catastrophically incompetent.

They merely proved that they are dumber than highly inefficient autocomplete algorithms, that they’re arguably not actually conscious.

They are nothing but cogs in a more ephemeral machinery of mindsets and unquestioned assumptions.

These collosal dumbasses likely won’t actually be fired by their boards for this astronomical fuck up, by the logic of the system they are slaves to… because capitalism is simply a mask worn, a charade danced by the same kind of elitist, maniacal, psycho and sociopathic impulse toward extreme power and control that has always cursed our species.

Its ultimately a fear response. A misdirected, very complex fear response. ‘Bad things can happen, bad people can do bad things, thus I must erect walls and pay guards and force farmers to toil and waste away to feed the guards, so that I can be safe in my castle.’

These LLMs, they can be used in sensible and broadly beneficial ways. They’re not ‘superintelligence’, but they can be genuinely useful when used responsibly, with safeguards, by people well trained in their use, just like any other human technology.

Perhaps we actually need a ‘technology’ that punishes, dissuades, redirects or moderates this suicidal impluse latent in us, to create an unsustainable degree of control over others.

A reconceptualization of ourselves and our society.

Perhaps the world needs an idea whose time has come…

… radical egalitarian empathy, solidarity, a collective understanding that we are all ultimately clever apes that ditched the body hair for sweating, who are all much more similar than we are different…

… a flattened power hierarchy with participation from more equal positions and between actors with less singular power, a restructured society that uses the tools and resources we have to guarantee a basic level of material security for all…

… a mindset that understands that freeing the masses from want, securing for all the bottom rung or two of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, that that is the truest form of actual personal safety and security that any individual can possibly achieve, in this world of ours filled with us easily frightened and frenzied apes.

Agreed. I job hunt as a hobby while employed, always a good idea to see what people are paying and what’s open. Unfortunately/fortunately im in a position where it’s hard to beat my pay and benefits. I can get more pay, with a fraction of the time off or autonomy I currently have. I can do full remote but know that I’m being watched and babysat to make sure I’m doing my job.

I’ve been working at my company for years. If my boss called in a panic and said there’s an emergency (he never does this), then I’d come in to be nice. I do long-term planning for after I’ve retired, just so my replacements are less frustrated by tech debt.

Foolish, maybe. But human organizations are made out of humans and we generally want to help each other, even when that tendency is being exploited.

Theres always an underlying exploitation by definition; your time is being bought for a flat fee, regardless of output unless theres a comission, and even then its less than youre worth also by definition.

That being said, small businesses operate differently and a lot of Americans (at least in my case) reject that simple, undeniable fact.

There are chill bosses that pass on more than others, but again, always a level of exploitation. The lesser-evils do deserve some praise, though.

Worth pointing out that you can run models locally on consumer hardware that are as good as frontier models from ~3 months ago (and that gap is getting smaller and smaller) which solves ever single problem listed in this post

Idk man in a surveillance state, AI seems like the most obvious way into everyone’s lives that’s ever been deployed by companies who are awful and shamelessly so.

For the case of local models, no not at all. Most local models are under a free license (or at least a non-commericial one) and it all runs locally on your hardware, however what you can run and how well depends on your hardware and some software fiddling. Non-local stuff if 100% a ploy to make everyone dependent on big tech even more than they already are, though
